Gangs in Schools

Gangs are not limited to situations outside the school or classroom nor are bullying situations limited to the hallways and classrooms inside. Ask yourself these questions about your child’s scool situation and, if you don’t know or like the answers, speak to your school’s administrative staff about your concerns.

  • Does your child’s school have a program or service designed to prevent bullying?
  • What are the school’s procedures for reprimanding bullies and what actions do they take to protect their victims?
  • Is there prevalent bullying against gay/lesbian students?
  • Is there prevalent bullying against specific ethnic races? (ie. Is there a potential for a hate-related crime to develop?)
  • Are racial extremists living or operating near your child’s school?
  • Does your child’s school conduct regular locker searches, including ALL students?
  • Does your child’s school sweep the halls and lockers with drug sniffing dogs? This is especially applicable to middle schools and high schools.
  • Does your child’s school have metal detectors?

Don’t just sit home and worry about the possibility of a situatino you are awar of eventually impacting the life of your child. Report any concerns to your school administrators and/or to the police. A proactive approach is your best method of self defense.
