Is Your Child Involved with a Gang?

With all of the news coverage and information regarding gangs and gang violence you may suddenly find yourself wondering whether or not your child is involved with, or even interested in, gang life.

Here’s another list of things you should be keeping a look out for. Children who are leaning towards gang life, whether they initially realize it or not, will start to adopt a new style of behavior, clothing, or attitude. Watch out for the following:

  • Your child suddenly has a new and larger group of friends that involves very few (if any) of the friends he usually associates with.
  • Your child suddenly changes his style of dress and it is strikingly similar to the clothing worn by others in his peer group.
  • Your child suddenly has an increase in money or cash flow with no viable source of income.
  • Your child suddenly develops a rebellious attitude towards you, your family, work, school, and any other established routine.
  • He or she suddenly begins experimenting with alcohol or drugs.
  • New tattoos or branding marks.
  • He or she suddenly begins displaying graffiti on book bags, book covers, walls, etc.
  • He or she develops a sudden interest in weapons.

There aren’t all of the signs of interest in gang life but they’re certainly a few of the most obvious. Make sure you sit your child down to explain the consequences of gang life if you notice these signs, especially if you catch them early on. You may need to speak with a guidance counselor, call the police, or even send your child to a different school. Do whatever you can to help your child learn to protect himself from gang life.
