Gang Clothing Styles
There’s been a lot of debate recently over whether or not public schools should implement the use of uniforms. While most of the kids are inclined to disagree, most of the (informed) parents understand that in today’s changing society the need to fit in stems far out of the realm of normal behavior and into the realm of dress as well.
A local high school has plans to implement dress codes within the next two years. It’s a HUGE, regional high school – one with a police officer on staff at all times due to the level of activity within its walls. Not sure WHY a dress code is important? Here’s a bit of information about gang clothing styles you might’ve missed if you weren’t at our last Family Night event.
- Each gang usually has a set of primary and secondary colors. You may or may not see these as some gangs are straying away from colors in order to avoid the attention of law enforcement.
- Colored handkerchiefs may be worn as bandannas on the head or may hang out of pockets as flags.
- Gang members may wear colored shoe strings and/or their shoe strings will be loosely tied.
- Gang members may push up their pant legs.
- Gang members may roll up their t-shirt sleeves.
- Some gangs claim designer logos as their own.
- Baseball caps may be worn, depending on the colors and styles, to represent or disrespect gangs. For example, the Gangster Disciples wear blue New York Yankees hats because the letters form a “Folk” pitchfork. The Bloods may wear red New York Yankees hats to show disrespect to the Folks.
- Baseball caps are usually worn to one side or the other or slightly tilted back.
- Members who are “representing” may also wear certain hairstyles, wear specific jewelry, and use specific body language (such as stances, walks, folded arms, and hand signals).
