The Neocortex

The neocortex, or neomammalian brain, is the highest functioning level of the triune brain. Physically, it is made up of the entirety of the hemispheres and a few smaller neurological groups. The most notable section is the cortex, which is split into the left and right hemispheres.

The cognitive abilities that separate human beings from animals are found in the cortex. Animals do have a neocortex but theirs is very small and undeveloped whereas the human neocortex takes up more than 2/3 of the total mass of the brain.

It’s important to remember that the left and right hemispheres control opposite sides of the body. The right hemisphere controls the physical left side of the body and is responsible for your holistic abilities such as abstract, spatial, music, and art. The left side of the brain controls the physical right side of the body and is responsible for your analytic abilities such as linear comprehension, speech, and rationalization.
